Sad week for Silverbridge Harps
The club has been in mourning over the past week as two long-standing members and loyal servants to the club tragically passed away. The attendance at the funerals of Sean Hearty in Crossmaglen on New Years Day and that of Michael McCreesh in Glassdrummond on Thursday last were a fitting tribute to two great men. When the burly figure of a sixteen year old Sean Hearty arrived on the scene at the Silverbridge club in the early 1960’s few could have imagined the impact that the youngster was destined to have on his club and community. Sean was a larger than life character in every way. He quickly gained his place on the senior team and was a regular for most of the following twenty years. The edge of the square was his favoured position and he was a master at the high catch and fisted point before the full back could close him down. Sean never held back in the heat of the battle and his desire to win got him involved in many scraps down through the years, but once the game was over, all was forgotten and no ill will harboured. Indeed that was a trait of the man all through his life.He was generous in the extreme. He held no grudges and was most helpful to his neighbours and club alike.Whilst he played for Armagh in the 1960’s, his first loyalty was always tom his club. After his playing career finished Sean served as minor team manager for a number of years and also as club treasurer. He also worked on the social side of things and was a willing volunteer to do bar work when required. In more recent years his generosity was evidence in his sponsorship of various teams and events in the club.
Michael McCreesh arrived on the scene somewhat later. He began life in the parish of Mullaghbawn but moved to Glassdrummond after his marriage to Anna thirty-six years ago. Although he never actually played football for the club, Michael became one of its most ardent supporters and served on many committees over a long number of years. He was assistant treasurer and one of the founding members of the now very successful lotto committee. He also worked behind the bar for many years and was on the team that ran so many successful carnivals.
The club extends its sincere sympathy to the Hearty and McCreesh families.
May Sean and Michael rest in peace.
The club would also like to thank all whom took part in the tributes to Sean and Michael, especially to our young folk who showed such dignity and respect in carrying out their duties.
