Silverbridge GAC Grounds Renamed Keeley Park
On Friday 23rd January, after a Mass for deceased members celebrated by Fr. McKeever, Silverbridge GAC held its annual general meeting. A large and enthusiastic gathering of members accepted a proposal to rename forthwith the complex Keleey Park in remembrance of Peter, club president and life-long committee member, who passed away suddenly in 2003.
The members received and accepted reports from the outgoing Chairman, Secretary and treasurer. The senior team was congratulated on gaining promotion to the Premier Division again and we wish them success in their endeavours in this year’s championship and league. The “B” team were runners up in the South Armagh championship and with increased commitment they could gain on that this year. The minors had a disappointing end to their year loosing out in the league to Dromintee and being beaten in the championship final by Harps who went on to win Ulster. Five of our minors were chosen to play for the county and gave a good account of themselves.
The u-16 team had a successful year. They are Óg Sport county winners, and made it to the Ulster semi-final to loose to Magherafelt who went on to take the Ulster title.
The social club and “wee bar” were busy throughout the year and continue to generate much needed revenue. The committee and bar staff were thanked for their selfless work.
The camogie teams will be back in training this year despite the disappointments of last year. Congratulations were extended to the girls who played for the county.
The ladies football teams will be back in action this year also hoping to build on from last year.
The managers and trainers of all the teams were thanked and praised for all their hard work and commitment in 2003.
The resource centre has been very successful and went from strength to strength in 2003. Membership of the fitness suite is growing and the installation of more new equipment means we can easily cater for these numbers and more. The salsa, yoga, keep-fit and circuit training classes are very popular as is the youth club, the computer suite and indoor football. Plans are underway to increase the number of activities available and perhaps have basketball.
The lotto continues to bring in funds and the lotto committee was praised for their hard work.
The bingo has grown in popularity and is doing well and plays its part in the social diary of some of our senior citizens as well as those not so senior.
Development was curtailed mainly to maintenance for most of the year, but with the purchase of land adjacent to the grounds plans are now being laid for another playing field etc. This is where we will be asking for volunteers and depending on the usual goodwill of our community. At this stage our deepest gratitude was extended to the many sponsors who rallied to help us with the deposit for our new grounds.
Pat Traynor took the chair for the election of our new executive committee. That committee is: Presidents-Fr.J McKeever, Pat Traynor, Mixie Toal, and Vice-President-Mickey Traynor. Chairman-Donal Walsh. Vice-Chairman Kieran Murphy. Secretary-Anthony Mallie. Assistant secretary-Liam Murphy and Daniel McKenna. Treasurer-Thomas Hamill. Assistant treasurer Tony McKenna and Thomas McKeown. PRO-Anne Martin. Registrar-Joe O’Connell. Youth delegates- Teresa Loye, Lorraine Murphy, Paula Martin and Aidan Murphy. Irish Officer-Louise Murphy. Development officers-Pat Murphy, Gene Martin, James Daly and Damien Rowland. County Liaison officer- Michael Mallie. Registration-Liam Murphy and Gene Martin.
