Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes
Seniors
The seniors had a busy weekend, playing Clanns on Friday night and Cross on Sunday afternoon. Friday night’s game was a thriller, played at a fast and furious pace. Peter Burns scored a goal right at the start of play and missed another soon afterwards, but Clanns then hit two goals and a point in quick succession. Our lads kept up the pressure and Peter got his second goal just before the interval making a half-time score of 3-4 to 2-4 in Clann’s favour. We got off to a great start in the second half when Bernard Connolly found the back of the net and brought us level. Midfielders Cormac McAvoy and Pete McCreesh worked hard and won good possession and laid on the ball for the forwards who kept us in touch all the way. The ever-dependable Connolly scored in the dying minutes to force a draw. Liam Campbell, D McCann and Cormac all helped build up the score. The final score was 3-9 each.
Sunday’s match turned out to be somewhat of an anti-climax. The lads came up against a very in-form Cross team, which was boosted by the presence of County subs John McEntee and the Kiernan Brothers, and hard as they tried they could not hold back the Cross onslaught.
Next weekend’s game with Newtown will be played on Thursday night in Newtown.
B Team
The B team went to Camlough on Wednesday evening to take on Killeavy in their quest for championship honours. The first half belonged to the Bridge. They played determinately and had 75% of possession in this period but failed to capitalise from this domination. They wasted a lot of ball from kicking wide of the mark, short passes back and forward when a long ball into the forwards might have been the better option or kicking the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. Our backs defended well and held Killeavy scoreless until a fumbled ball close to the goals allowed Killeavy get a goal, but at half-time we were still a point ahead. From the start of the second half things started to go wrong for us. Killeavy began to win the midfield contest and put the defenders under severe pressure. The Bridge backs tackled and contested every ball but Killeavy pressed on and picked off their scores and although every man made a great effort it was to be Killeavy’s night. We were level on points but the three goals made the difference. We congratulate Killeavy and wish them success in the final.
Next Wednesday’s match is away to Mullaghbawn.
Minors
The minors played St Colmans last Monday and had a comprehensive win. St Colmans made a determined effort and contested every ball but the Bridge always had the edge. For the number of scores that our lads got there were almost as many chances kicked wide of the mark, and in a tighter match those wides might have been the difference between victory and defeat.
On Monday night they play Cavanakill Gaels in the Bridge in the first round of the championship.
U 16
The team took part in the Óg Sport competition on Thursday night last in Crossmaglen and won a couple of games. They travel to play Cavanakill Gaels this coming Thursday.
U 14
The U14s did not have a match this week but were in training for their encounter with Culloville in the Championship final. This game will kick off at 7 15pm on Tuesday night in Crossmaglen. Good luck lads!
Ladies Football Junior Championship
At half time Lissummon led by 1-12 to 0-1 and were well on their way to a second round match. The Bridge lifted their game in the second half and four goals from Dara Collins and one from substitute Siobhan Moley took us almost level, but Lissummon got two late goals and clenched the match. Given that the Bridge fielded four U14 players this was a tremendous second half performance and the whole team showed great determination to haul themselves back so well into the game. Well done girls and good luck to Lissummon. The match ended at 3-17 to 5-4.
There will be training for all U14 and senior girls on Wednesday night at 7 30pm. It is important for all u14 panel members to attend training in preparation for the championship match with Rangers on Monday 5th July. Coaching for U14s and beginners will continue on Sunday mornings at 11am.
Lotto
The numbers for last Monday were 5, 14, 18 and 25. There were four match three winners who each received £50. The jackpot is now £6,000 or €9,000.
Coaching
A word of appreciation goes to those who undertook the recent coaching course and well done to the 7 who passed.
Gaelic Telecom
I know it seems as if we always have the begging bowl to hand, but we are now endorsing a venture which could save you money and at the same time generate much needed funds for the club. By choosing to change from your current telephone provider to Gaelic Telecom you could save substantially on your phone bills and our club will benefit because we will receive 10% or 15%, depending on the option you choose, back from Gaelic Telecom. For further information or application forms please contact any committee member or Kieran on 30861 045.
Summer Camp
