Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Seniors

In their encounter with Dromintee on Friday night the seniors had a real opportunity to take the result, but their inability to score lost us the game. Throughout the game eight shots, some of them frees, went wide of the mark while four more were kicked into the goalie’s hands.

Both teams took time to settle into the game and the ball passed back and forward the field for ten minutes before Dromintee scored a point from a 45. For most of the first half we held our own and were a point ahead at one stage, but slack marking allowed the visitors equalise. Then as the break approached Dromintee kicked in a long ball over the heads of the defenders and hit the back of the net. Another point gave them a lead of 1-1 at half time. The second half began as the first had ended with Dromintee winning the ball at midfield and heading for our goals. They sent the first shot wide but scored with the next. Our lads settled and began to contest the ball more, and the backs had a mighty game tackling and intercepting. Dromintee only managed to score 3 points, two of them frees, in the half and the defenders must take the praise for that.  It was a tight game and in the end only the goal separated the teams.  This week’s game will be in Mullaghbawn on Thursday night at 8 pm

B Team

Wednesday’s match was played on a lovely summer’s evening with a strong wind blowing down the field. Mullaghbawn elected to play with the wind in the first half, but they were unable to make it work for them as time and again the ball curled wide. Silverbridge pressed forward having won the midfield contest and opened up the Mullaghbawn defence but a shot at an open goal sailed wide. They fielded well, blocking and tackling for every ball and this tactic worked when the backs made an interception, got the ball forward and Paul Murphy drove it into the back of the net. 25 minutes passed before Mullaghbawn got a score from a free and the Bridge reached the break 1-2 ahead.  Mullaghbawn started off the second half in a determined manner but were denied the opportunity to score by the goalie, Benny Cummisky, and his backs. Silverbridge tried to use the wind by kicking long balls in to the forwards but they found it hard to judge the wind and balls floated wide. For a short period the team seemed to slack off and Mullaghbawn got a few scores but our men found a new energy and ran at the backs forcing the Mullaghbawn goalkeeper to make some good saves.  The team worked hard and earned their win. The final score was 1-9 to 0-5.
U21

At 7 30 pm on Wednesday evening the U21 team will play Middleton in the first round of the championship in Silverbridge.

Minors

The minors travelled to Dromintee for last week’s game.  They had an excellent start to the match when Ciarán Conlon scored a goal from a move which started from a good interception by Brendan Maguire. Silverbridge kept the pressure on throughout this half and picked up their scores, although as usual they missed almost as many chances.  The backs held firm, forcing the home team to kick wide and goalie, Fergal Campbell, made a great save to keep Dromintee scoreless until the dying minutes of the half when they were awarded a penalty and found the back of the net.  Silverbridge started the second half well but seemed to loose concentration and played in a lacklustre manner in the second period, fumbling the ball, kicking shots wide or straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. They paid the price by allowing Dromintee score two points, then a goal and very soon the equaliser.  The Bridge lads tried hard to get the score that would mean victory but their accuracy let them down and they had to be content with a draw.  Next week’s match is against Crossmaglen in the championship.

U 16

The championship match against Crossmaglen was postponed on Thursday night.  This Thursday the team is at home to Carrickcruppen.

U 14

The U14s game with Forkhill was cancelled on Tuesday night. Next Tuesday they play Culloville for the fourth time this season in what promises to be an interesting encounter.

U 12

The U12s had a great game against Crossmaglen on Saturday. Cross fielded a strong team but our lads made it a good contest. Sean McLoughlin deputised in the nets for the first time and played extremely well, puling off some wonderful saves.   Seamie Kelly and Peter Carragher were excellent in defence, while Gary Rowland battled well in midfield.  Harry Thornton took the fight to Cross up front. This team is coming on in leaps and bounds and although they lost by a few points they can be pleased with their performance.

Ladies Football

The U14 girls defeated Rangers in the first round of the championship on Monday night last. As in the recent league game between the sides Rangers fielded a very young team and battled gamely throughout against the stronger home side.  Paula Reel and Siobhán Moley were superb in midfield, and with Niamh Gernon and Gráinne Garvey each hitting the net twice the Bridge ran out comfortable winners. They now progress to meet Mullaghbawn in the county semi-final on Monday 9th August. Meantime, training continues on Sunday mornings for beginners and U14s, and for all U14s and seniors on Wednesdays evenings at 7 30 pm.

Last week’s winning numbers were 7, 22, 24 and 30.  There were three match three winners who received £70 each.  The Jackpot has now risen to £6,400 or €9,600.
