Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes
Seniors
The senior team are playing well at the moment. On Friday of the week before last they played Dromintee and had a real opportunity to take the result. Their inability to score lost them the game as eight shots, some from frees, went wide of the mark while four more were kicked into the goalkeeper’s hands. At one stage of the first half they were a point ahead, but slack marking allowed the visitors equalise and a goal just before the break gave them a lead of 1-1. The Bridge backs had an excellent game and in the second half Dromintee only managed 3 points, two of them frees, and the defenders must take the praise for that. It was a tight game and in the end only the goal separated the teams.
Last Thursday’s game with Mullaghbawn was also a tightly contested encounter but on this occasion the Bridge made sure of their victory. It was a great team effort with Niall and Christopher Reel tackling and defending expertly, Dee McCann and Brendan Bellew scooping up in midfield and Ciarán Conlon picking off some nice scores. The final score was 1-7 to 0-8. On Sunday next they are at home to Pearse Óg.
B Team
The B team did not have a game last week but the week before they had the upper hand in the game in Mullaghbawn. Although playing against the wind in the first half they fielded well, contesting, tackling and blocking and moving forward. By half time they were 1-2 ahead and they built on this lead after the break and the final score was 1-9 to 0-5. This week they play at home to Culloville.
U21
The U21s had a good win in the first round of the championship against Middletown last Wednesday evening. The Bridge lads were all fired up for the match and got off to a flying start. The game was played at a blistering pace and when the visitors won ball they were quickly tackled and dispossessed. The whole team played very well and dominated all positions over the field and were deserving of their win.
Minors
The minors travelled to Dromintee for last week’s game. They had an excellent start to the match when Ciarán Conlon scored a goal from a move that started from a good interception by Brendan Maguire. Silverbridge kept the pressure on throughout this half and picked up their scores, although as usual they missed almost as many chances. The backs held firm, forcing the home team to kick wide and goalie, Fergal Campbell, made a great save to keep Dromintee scoreless until the dying minutes of the half when they were awarded a penalty and found the back of the net. Silverbridge started the second half well but seemed to loose concentration and played in a lacklustre manner in the second period, fumbling the ball, kicking shots wide or straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. They paid the price by allowing Dromintee score two points, then a goal and very soon the equaliser. The Bridge lads tried hard to get the score that would mean victory but their accuracy let them down and they had to be content with a draw. This week’s match is against Crossmaglen in the Championship in Crossmaglen.
U 16
The U16s met Crossmaglen in Cullyhanna last Thursday night in the Championship. The Bridge team was severely weakened through injuries and came up against an in-form Cross. They gave of their best, especially Eugene Byrne, but had no answer to Cross who now proceed to the next round.
U 14
This team played well against Culloville last Tuesday night and in the end won comprehensively. Both teams competed enthusiastically but the Bridge lads won more of the ball and got the scores. We send good wishes to the young Culloville player who picked up an injury and hope he is back on his feet. This week’s game is against Belleek in the Bridge.
U 12
Saturday’s game was postponed but check the paper for this week’s match. Training as usual.
U 10
Saturday’s game will now be played on Tuesday evening in Carrickcruppen.
Ladies Football
The U14 girls defeated Rangers in the first round of the championship on Monday week last. As in the recent league game between the sides Rangers fielded a very young team and battled gamely throughout against the stronger home side. Paula Reel and Siobhán Moley were superb in midfield, and with Niamh Gernon and Gráinne Garvey each hitting the net twice the Bridge ran out comfortable winners. They now progress to meet Mullaghbawn in the county semi-final on Monday 9th August. Meantime, training continues on Sunday mornings for beginners and U14s, and for all U14s and seniors on Wednesdays evenings at 7 30 pm.
Lotto
Last week’s winning numbers were 7, 8, 11 and 28. There were four match three winners who received £50 each. The Jackpot has now risen to £6,600 or €9,900 so make sure you are in for this week’s draw.
Meetings
The Executive will hold a meeting on Tuesday (tonight) at 9pm. All committee members to attend.
