Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Seniors

On a blustery Sunday afternoon the seniors went to neighbouring Cullyhanna for their match with St Patricks. The weather took a turn for the worse as the game commenced, and by the final whistle players, mentors, officials and those supporters who chose not to sit in their cars were drenched to the skin. Conditions were slippery underfoot and it was hard to judge the wind which blew in gusts down the field. The Bridge opted to play with the wind in the first half but they had difficulty in making it work to their advantage. Liam Campbell opened the scoring, fisting the ball across the bar and might have got two goals right afterwards. St Pats won more of the ball in midfield but the Bridge tackled tightly and it was 21 minutes before they managed to score from a free. The Bridge by this time had 4 points and five wides.  Then Thomas Mallie kicked a long ball in which beat the goalie and the half time score was 1-6 to 0-2 in favour of the Bridge. The Bridge won the first ball when play recommenced, won a free but it drifted wide. The Pats then had a good spell and got a couple of scores. The Bridge worked hard and several times got the ball out of danger and into the scoring zone to no avail. Tight tackling forced the home team kick ball wide of the mark and in the end the points went to the Bridge. The final score was 1-6 to 0-7.

Next Sunday’s game is against Clan na Gael in the Bridge at 2pm.

B Team

The B league semi-final match with Killeavy is expected to be played on Wednesday night, but do check the fixtures in the local papers for details.

U21

The U21 team travelled to Whitecross last Wednesday night for their second match in this year’s championship. Due to injury and holiday commitments the whole squad was not available, but those members who were there played a great game and proceeded to the next round.  Whitecross opened the scoring from a free kick and at one stage were 4 points up but our players tackled and contested every ball and fought back well to lead at half time. They held that lead for the entire second half and deserved their win with a final score of 3-8 to 1-9. It was a good tight game throughout but the scuffle in the dying minutes of the match somewhat spoiled it. The entire team performed well with Anthony Mallie, Niall Reel and Kevin O’Connell defending superbly.  Peter Burns and Seamie Martin worked hard in midfield and picked up much of the breaking ball. Peter was in great form and scored two goals. Up front Damian McCann and Brendan Maguire were on top form. They must now wait to see whom they met in the next round on the 18th August.

The minors did not have a game last week but this Monday Whitecross come to the Bridge to play them at 7 30pm in their last game before the play-offs.
