Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes
Seniors
The senior encounter with Clan Na Gael on Sunday afternoon was very tense and exciting. It was a game that our boys were determined to win and they gave a tremendous display of football to come away with the points. In a wonderful team effort the backs harassed and dispossessed, the midfielders fought for every ball sending it into the forwards who took their chances as they presented and built up a good lead. The lads had prepared well and the management team of Martin McQuillan, Tony McKenna and Pat Conlon must be commended for the way they inspired the team and for a very effective game plan.
The Clans got the first point but our lads marked tightly and from an interception the ball moved down the field to Ciarán Conlon who put it across the bar. The Bridge gained the edge and scored two more points without reply. Clans fought hard but our lads had the greater hunger and gathered the breaking ball and created the chances. With this pressure a goal was inevitable and it was good when it came. The ball was passed to Ciaran once more and he headed straight goal wards and shot the ball past the keeper into the back of the net. A short time later he took full advantage of a mix-up in the Clan’s defence and we had another goal. Clans tried hard to get the ball into scoring range but our defenders were brilliant and stood firm, time and again clearing the ball out of danger. We missed a few chances towards the end of the half but at the break the score was 2-7 to 0-4.
The Bridge settled into the game again after the break and they had the first score of the half. And so the game progressed, with tight marking and the whole team supporting each other. Clans did manage some scores but once again the backs forced them to kick wide and Damien McVerry was strong in the goals to deny their efforts there. Although we only managed three points in this half we had built up enough of a lead to finish with a final score of 2-10 to 0-9. Scorers were Ciarán Conlon, Peter Burns, Brendan Bellew, Bernard Connolly and Liam Campbell. We wish Peter Burns, who was injured during the game and had to go to hospital with a possible broken nose, a speedy recovery.
The Bridge has one more game in the league but this has not been refixed yet so it is back to training as usual for the next few weeks.
