Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Minors

The minors played Culloville in Cullyhanna on Saturday in the league semi-final replay.  On a beautiful, calm evening the two teams served up some delightful football to the many supporters who had come to cheer them on. The pitch was in excellent condition and both teams were determined to proceed to the final. Gerard McGarvey got the first score for the Bridge, but Culloville scored twice before Brendan Maguire equalised. Culloville then had a good period to get three more points but our lads started to win the midfield battle and Ciarán Conlon and Brendan Maguire got two more scores. The team began to pressurise the Culloville defence and their gaolie was forced to make a good save under this pressure. Twenty minutes into the half the Bridge took the lead and refused to relinquish it for the rest of the match. The half was played at a very fast pace with tight marking the order of the day. Our backs defended in determined fashion and Culloville were denied a score for the last 15 minutes of the half, and at the break we had a three-point lead.

Culloville won the ball at the restart and scored a point from a free. They fought gamely and won the breaking ball, moving quickly up the field to launch an attack on our goals, but goalie Vince Mackin stood firm and saved their two shots at goal. Backs Liam Collins and Colnell Quinn had a great game fighting for every ball and sending it up the field to the forwards. Seamie martin and Gerard McGarvey played excellently in the second half and gathered up most of the ball at midfield. Anthony Mallie made some vital interceptions. Both teams only scored three points in the second half but the Bridge just had the edge in scoring opportunities for they had a goal disallowed as a square ball and they kicked eight balls wide of the posts. The final score was 0-11 to 0-8.

This was a great game of football played by two teams of fit and committed young men who showed their Gaelic skills for our entertainment.

The Bridge proceed to meet Carrickcruppen in the final at a date and venue to be announced.

Intermediate Championship

The match between Ballyhegan and Carrickcruppen will be played next Sunday afternoon in Silverbridge.

Last week the numbers were 2, 8, 11, and 22. Twenty people came very close by matching three numbers and 14 won £10 while four others got €15. This week there will be £8,600 or €12,900 in the jackpot.

Meetings

On Thursday next 30th the committee organising the Gala sports Night will meet in the Resource Centre at 9pm. Arrangements are moving nicely on now and we have had a great response from people wishing to take a table on the night. Adrian Logan will be Master of Ceremonies and there will be several sporting personalities in attendance and lots of wonderful items for auction and raffle.

Wee Bar

Pat and Donal will play in the Wee Bar this Saturday night.

Youth Club

A new committee was elected at the AGM last Wednesday night in the Resource Centre. They are Chair- Anne Martin, Asst.Chair Aidan Murphy, Secretary Peter Murphy, Asst. Jacqui Thornton, Treasurer Thomas Hamill and Asst. Ann Garvey. This committee will carry on the good work, which the outgoing members did over the past years, and will endeavour to help the youth leaders provide a wide range of activities for the youth of the community. On this note can I also say thank you to those parents who came to the meeting and to those who promised to help out on youth nights. Our list of volunteers is not complete and we would welcome hearing from anyone over 18 (Girl or Boy) who can give us two hours an odd night.   The Youth club will commence its activities on Tuesday 5th October and I will give full details next week.

Tenner a Month Field Development

The monthly draw for members of this club for a meal for two took place on Sunday night and the lucky winner was Anne Marie Harvey. The proceeds from the members of this club are mounting nicely, but we are seeking to increase the membership so if you would like to join or receive information please contact Kieran on 30861 045.

Armagh U21

We send our best wishes to the Armagh U21 squad, as they take on Mayo in Breffeni Park on Saturday next.
