Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

U 16    Silverbridge are U16 league champions

The U16s met Crossmaglen in the league final on Saturday in Carrickcruppen and it was fitting they should win the “new” Peter Keeley cup. Peter had been such an advocate of underage football and I’m sure he was smiling down on the team as they headed back to the Bridge with their trophy.

The game was played at a very fast pace and from the start it was evident the Bridge lads were “up for it”. They had the advantage of a slight wind in the first fifteen minutes and used it well. The team was well prepared and fit and they applied the pressure throughout the field. Niall Treanor opened the scoring with a well taken free, and great work by the backs forced Cross to kick wide three times before Eugene Burns found the target. The lads played for each other tackling, defending and pressurising and winning possession. Vince Mackin had a great game and defended his goals superbly, denying Cross goal chances and clearing the ball down the field. The backs had a terrific game showing skill in blocking and tackling.  The forwards went goal-wards at every opportunity, picked up their points and saw a sure goal go just wide. It was a good first half for our lads and they deserved a half time lead of 0-7 to 0-0.

In the second half it was the turn of the Cross lads to pile on the pressure but the Bridge withstood all that they threw at them. They got the first score of the second half but Niall Treanor replied soon afterwards and so it went throughout the half. They managed six more scores but our lads were always able to hold them at bay and denied them the opportunity to seize the advantage. Backs Colm Hughes, Colnell Quinn, Paul Hughes, Daniel Garvey, Paudie Cumisky and Niall Quinn never eased in their role of defender and ably assisted Vince Mackin to deny Cross as much as possible. In midfield Niall Treanor and Liam Finnegan harried and tackled and sent the ball forward and Niall scored 0-2. Forwards Eugene Burns (0-5), Gerard McGarvey (0-2), Fergal Campbell (0-1), Christopher Murphy (0-1) who came on for Stephen Campbell, Ruairí Griffin and Cathal Fegan did all that was asked of them and more. Subs Owen Duffy and Ciarán McCann were on hand and ready if needed.

Over all this was a good game of Gaelic football played by two teams whose only wish was to bring the title back to their own club and in the end the Bridge proved they were just that bit better and deserved their victory. Well done lads and congratulations to the management team of Tommy Treanor. Daniel McKenna and Michael McShane for their commitment and encouragement to the lads throughout the year. The final score was 0-11 to 0-7.

U 14

The U14 championship winning team were treated to a visit to Croke Park on Saturday. Managers Liam Murphy, Gerry and Liam Smyth organised a tour of Croke Park museum and stadium and afterwards took the team to Bettystown where they enjoyed the amusements. Everyone agreed it was a great day and even better as they arrived back to the Bridge for the food that had been laid on for them in time to greet the victorious U16s bringing home the Peter Keeley cup.

U21

The team plays Pearse Ógs next Sunday in Mullabrack at 2 pm.

Michael Donnelly Cup

Some 50 boys and girls took part in this competition on Friday night and produced some nice football. It was great to see their enthusiasm and thanks goes to all who played.

Lotto

The numbers last week were 6, 16, 24 and 26. Seven matched three and got £20 while four others got €30. The jackpot is now £9,800 or €14,700.

Dinner Dance.

The dinner dance takes place this year in the clubrooms on Saturday 27th November. Music will be provided by Paper Moon followed by a disco. Tickets will cost £13 or €20 and are available from any committee member. Thanks to the U16 win we have even more to celebrate this year.

Tramps Ball.

Everyone is talking about the Tramps Ball and the great night it was. It was wonderful to see the effort our young adults put into their costumes and to watch the craic as we tried to guess the faces behind the masks. They were there from the Stone Age with the Flintstones, through the Roman period with their fine ladies and officers, to the Wild West, to the 60s right up to this century and beyond. We had visits from Marlon Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, a 30s gangster, Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Beetlejuice and the Incredible Hulk to name just a few. The “old gentleman” won first prize and the other prizewinners were Charlie Chaplin, the RUC woman, the archbishop and the Leprechaun.
