Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Club Presentation Night

On Saturday night last we celebrated our footballing achievements of the past year at our annual dance. A large number of members and friends turned out to help us celebrate and all had an enjoyable night. Following an address by chairman Donal Walsh, Kieran Murphy introduced the Senior lady footballers who were runners-up in their division and Donal presented them with their medals. The ladies have only been in action for a few years and they are improving all the time thanks to their commitment and the encouragement of Kieran Murphy and Brian Traynor. They would like to say thank-you to their sponsor Declan Walsh Construction. The senior lady Player of the Year is Roisín Murphy, while Dara Collins is the minor Player of the year and Donal presented them with awards to mark the occasion.

We then passed on to the Scór which plays an important part in the club. Thirty years ago in 1974 and again in 1975 our Scór na nÓg quiz team won Ulster titles and to commerate this achievement there was a special presentation to Tommy Flynn, Brian Murphy and Joe Murphy who were the ’74 team and to Anne Murphy who replaced Brian in ’75.

Earlier on this year our senior Scór Novelty Act and Quiz teams won county titles and each member received a memento to mark their success.

We then welcomed South Board secretary Seamus MacDonagh who presented the U16 and Minor teams with their cups and medals. Both teams played great football this year and won their leagues. It was fitting that the U16 team should be the first proud winners of the Peter Keeley Cup and as they stepped up to receive their medals we showed our appreciation to their managers Tommy Treanor, Mickey McShane and Daniel McKenna and team sponsors Creggan Stores. The Minor team served us up some exciting football through the year to the delight of managers Noel Reel and Kevin Burns and sponsors Polar International.

Our senior and B teams, though not winning trophies, had a successful year in that the seniors consolidated their position in Division One and intend to build on that for next year. We wish to mark our appreciation to managers Tony McKenna, Pat Conlon and Martin McQuillan and to Donnellys Silverbridge who sponsors the senior team and to B Team managers Rory Donnelly and Donal Walsh and SEPA who is the sponsor of the B Team

Then came the part of the proceedings that had kept everyone guessing---the Players of the Year. First of all Brigid Reel presented the Peter Reel Cup to senior Player Cormac McAvoy who also received an award from Donal Walsh.  Mixie Toal then presented the Mick Bailey Cup to B Player Sean O’Leary and Donal presented him with his award.  Mary Quinn presented the Gerry Hughes Cup to Minor Player Anthony Mallie and Pat Conlon presented U16 Player Vince Mackin with the Jim McKinley Cup and these young men were also presented with their awards by Donal.  We wish to thank Tony Hearty who kindly sponsored the awards.

To complete the ceremony Donal then called up Damien McCann who was a member of the Armagh All Ireland winning U21 team and Seamus Martin who won an All Ireland medal on the Dundalk Institute of Technology Freshers team to receive Achievement of the Year Awards.

All that remained was to thank everyone for the help and support they gave the club through the year and look forward to next year. With the serious part of the proceedings completed everyone settled down to admire the awards and have a good night.
