Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Seniors

The seniors continued on their winning way in the Ulster League on Sunday last when they played host to Killygarry of Cavan and won comprehensively. On a glorious spring day the Bridge played the first half into the strong sunshine. This might have been a disadvantage but our lads were not put off and served up some fine football. Cormac McAvoy opened the scoring for the Bridge with a great point in the first minute. The lads started to pile on the pressure but had a couple of misses before Damian McCann found his mark twice. Our midfield had a determined game and won most of the ball there, working it into the forwards. Cormac McAvoy and Barry Campbell were everywhere, contesting and fielding well. The backs defended well and denied the visitors many chances, harrying and forcing shots wide. Killygarry had to wait fifteen minutes for their first point when a ball bounced awkwardly in the square and went over the bar. This spurred the Bridge into action again and from an interception by Ruairi Murchan the ball passed to Ciaran Conlon who turned sharply and took his point. Two more scores before the break left us six points ahead.

As soon as the game resumed the Bridge applied the pressure but were unable to convert their chances and Killygarry got the first score from a free. The Bridge kept going forward time and again to see the ball go harmlessly astray. Christopher Reel scored a great point on the run and it took this to settle them down. Stefan Murphy played fearlessly and was more than a match for his opponent. Brendan Bellew got a couple of nice points too and Ciaran Conlon got three in this half, one of them a 45m kick. While this was a good win in which the team achieved a full-time score of 0-15 to 0-2 they also had a tally of 15 wides that on another occasion might be a cause for concern, but we now go forward with three wins and a draw under our belts.

Next week we play away to Tempo in Fermanagh. The match will be at 12 00 and a bus will leave the clubrooms at 10 am.

B Team

The Bs will play Clanns in Dundalk on Wednesday night at 8 pm in a challenge match.

U 14

The U14s were defeated in their first match of the season in the Féile competition by Carrickcruppen. The game was played in Silverbridge on Saturday last in blustery conditions. Having lost the toss the Bridge lads struggled against a strong wind in the first half, and by half time Carrickcruppen had built up a good lead. Despite a determined second half performance the Bridge boys could not reduce the margin and Carrickcruppen emerged deserving winners. There were some good performances from goalkeeper, Brian Harvey, Paul McNamee and Peter Carragher.

Training for the forthcoming season continues this Saturday at 3 pm.  Silverbridge U14 management would like to thank HEARTY OILS for sponsoring a new set of jerseys that were proudly worn for the first time on Saturday.
