Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes
Seniors
On a beautiful Friday evening in late April in front of the large crowd of home and visiting supporters who had made their way to Silverbridge the senior team played an exiting game of football against Dromintee, last year’s League winners. The Bridge made the first move and Ciaran Conlon opened the scoring with a fine point. Dromintee then went on the offensive and tried out the long kick-in to their forward line; a tactic which our backs found hard to curtail and they had three opportunities for goal, luckily only one found the back of the net. The battle for midfield did not quite go our way either although Barry Campbell and Cormac McAvoy contested every ball. The visitors had a good period in the middle of the half when they picked up quite a few scores but when our forwards got the ball they took their scores and by half time the difference was five points.
The Bridge took the advantage after the break and points from Ciaran Conlon and Liam Campbell brought us into contention, but Dromintee got three points to stretch their lead again. This half was a more even contest with both teams scoring five points and having an equal number of missed opportunities. The Bridge had let the game get away from them in the first half but they fought hard in the second to deny the visitors further advantage.
Next Sunday they play away to Mullaghbawn at 2 pm.
B Team
The B team’s match was cancelled last Wednesday night because St Michael’s could not field a team. This Wednesday they play away to Culloville.
Minors
The Minor’s game with Carrickcruppen on Monday night was a game of two halves in which the Bridge built up a substantial lead by half time but just managed to sustain that lead in the second half. The team was without the services of Niall Treanor and Gerard McGarvey who were playing for the county minor team, but all the players settled quickly into the task at hand. Paul Hearty had a great game at corner-forward and Ciarán Martin’s goal in the first period of play helped build the Bridge tally. Unfortunately Brendan Watters was injured on the stroke of half time and had to be brought to the hospital after the match and he may be out of action for a time.
He was replaced in the second half by Paul Largey who scored a goal to build on the Bridge lead but the team lost their way a little for a time and Carrickcruppen were able to notch up a few scores, but by the end our lads had done enough to ensure the game was theirs.
Monday’s night match with Killeavy will be played in the Bridge.
U 16
The U16s got their first win of the season on Thursday night against Shane O’Neills. It was a toughly fought contest for the whole 60 minutes. We played with a strong breeze in the first half but went in at the break a point down. Four unanswered points into the wind at the beginning of the second half put us ahead. Shane O’Neills got a goal to reclaim the lead but we battled on and came out winners by a margin of four. Kevin O’Neill, Paul Hughes and Christopher Murphy defended well with Ruairí Griffin and Cathal Fegan controlling midfield and Stephen Campbell scoring well.
U 14
The U14 match with Shane O’Neills had to be called off last Tuesday night because the field was closed.
On Tuesday they are at home to St Pats.
U 12
The U12s made a gallant effort in their quest for championship honours on Saturday last but were defeated by the narrowest of margins. The field was slippery but the whole team were determined to do well and they played some skilful football. Darren Rowland, Cillian Quinn and Martin Hearty all got their scores in the first half and only a point divided the teams at the break. The second half was a tight contest with Martin Hearty’s penalty shot finding the back of the net, but shortly afterwards Carrickcruppen also scored a goal from a quickly taken free. Bernard Garvey who came on as a substitute evened matters again with a fine goal and so the game progressed and it was in the balance until the final whistle. It was an exciting game in which our lads gave their best.
Training on Thursday evening at 6 30. They play Carrickcruppen again next week in the League.
U 10
The U10s had no game this week because of the Armagh game but everything, hopefully, will be back to normal next week for Sunday’s match with St Patricks in Silverbridge.
Ladies Football
The ladies were busy last week. On Wednesday night the seniors played the re-fixed match with Whitecross and in a match in which they lead the whole way they ran out convincing winners. Adrienne Hoey was strong in defence, Roisin Murphy had a good game at centre half and Seana O’Neill, Kevina Reel, Claire Loye, Dara Collins and Teresa Loye were in scoring form. Next Saturday they play Sarsfields at 7 pm in the Bridge.
The minors who play on the amalgamated team “Cashel” were in action on Saturday evening against Crossmaglen. This match could so easily have been a Cashel victory but although they had most of the play they just couldn’t get the scores and had to be content with a draw at the end. Defenders Jamie Bishop, Roisin Murphy and Adrienne Hoey with Anita Quinn on the forty played well.
The U14s have two games this week. On Monday night they are away to Mullaghbawn at 7 pm and on Friday night they host Killeavy.
Lotto
The lotto numbers for last week were 2, 14, 26 and 30. The jackpot was not won but there were four match three winners who each received £50. This week’s jackpot is £10,600 or €15,900.
