Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Seniors

The seniors travelled to Mullabrack on Friday night to play Pearse Ógs and after a hard exciting match went home victorious. Play was equally divided in the first half with Ógs getting the first point from play followed by one from a free. Our first two shots went wide but Niall Reel then opened the tally for the Bridge with a well-taken free. Both teams marked tightly, fielding closely and contesting every ball. The Bridge backs kept up the pressure throughout the half forcing Ógs into errors, while Barry Campbell had a good game keeping things flowing around the middle of the field. In a fine free flowing move the ball reached Bernard Connolly and he found the back of the net. Another point from Damian McCann gave the Bridge the minimum lead at half time.

Ógs started the second half with great determination and equalised, pointed again to take the lead and scored a third point in as many minutes. We then had a man dismissed for a second yellow card offence and Ógs claimed another score. There was dismay among the many Bridge supporters as it looked that the game was slipping away from us, but the lads dug deep and Damien got an important point. Kenneth McVerry played his part in the goals to deny Ógs a certain goal. From then on the game was played on Bridge terms and Dee got two more points to equalise. Ógs did not score again in the game while Cormac McAvoy who was winning a lot of ball at midfield surged forward and was rewarded with a goal and a further three points consolidated the Bridge win. The Final score was 2-10 to 0-10.

Next weekend’s match is with Dromintee at the Bridge and will be played on Friday night at 7 pm.

B Team

The B team had their first league match of the season last Wednesday night when they played Carrickcruppen in the Bridge. The first half was an even contest with the midfield battle all-important. Jarlath Burns was in great form helping the Bridge claim most of the possession there and the forwards then took the contest goal wards. Thomas Mallie opened with a point and Kevin Byrne’s goal shortly afterwards set the tone for the match. By half time they had notched up 1-7, had a goal saved and went in at the break with a three-point lead.

The second half continued as the first had ended with the Bridge in tremendous form. The backs denied the visitors scoring opportunities while all the forwards took their scores and in the end they won comprehensively. This Wednesday they play away to St Michaels at 7 pm in Newtown.

Minors

The minors had a tight encounter with Dromintee last Monday but came away with the points. Dromintee got off to a good start with a point from play but Ruairi Griffith scored a great goal five minutes in to settle the Bridge lads. Dromintee replied with a goal of their own and an exciting encounter followed with possession at midfield making the difference. The Bridge defence stood firm and marked well to cause the Dromintee forwards to shoot wide. A Niall Quinn goal from a penalty kept us in contention but Dromintee also found the back of the net and at half time they had built up a three point lead. Dromintee were away first after the break but it was Ciarán Martin who got the first score and a Niall Treanor point soon after narrowed the margin. Liam Finnegan worked at a fast rate fielding and tackling and the ball was moved in skilfully for Eugene Burns’ goal. The lads worked hard and held on to their lead to win eventually 3-7 to 2-7.

This Monday their game with Carrickcruppen is at 7 15 pm in the Bridge.

U 16

The U16s were unlucky to come up against a strong Oliver Plunketts side in their game on Thursday night. They gave of their best throughout the match but, although they kept in contention in the first half, they were out classed in the second. Ruairi Griffith and Cathal Fegan at midfield and backs Daniel Garvey and Christopher Murphy led by example and the whole team made a great effort but they are young and inexperienced yet. Training as usual this Tuesday evening.

U 14

The U14s ran out unlucky losers in a very competitive and entertaining match against Dromintee last Tuesday night.  The Bridge started the match strongly, playing some good football. A well-taken Padraig Griffith goal gave the Bridge the advantage, however Dromintee responded to leave the scores level at half time. In the second half both teams continued to add on scores and as the game approached an exciting final few minutes the scores remained level. The Bridge put the Dromintee defence under pressure but they defended well and moved the ball quickly into attack to score two goals in the dying minutes to secure the win. Although this was a disappointing result the performance from all the Bridge players deserves great credit.

This week (tonight Tuesday) they play away to Shane O’Neills at 7 15 pm.

U 12

The U12s were away to St Josephs on Saturday and recorded a win after a great game of football. They had a dream first half in which Gerard Mines scored 2-1 and Darren Rowland also got a goal. They battled hard in the second half with Paul Hearty and Patrick Reel having a great time in defence, and Cillian Quinn and Paul Hearty performing well too. But it is to Darren Murphy the Man of the Match title must be awarded because he saved a penalty and made some vital blocks all of which helped ensure a victory. This was a total squad effort as all the subs got their chance to play. The final score was 3-3 to 2-4. The lads are reminded training will be at 6 pm sharp on Thursday evening.

U 10

The U10s game was postponed last week due to the Armagh game in Croke Park and details of this week’s fixture will be in the paper.

U 8

The U8s travelled to Cross on Saturday and in a game of three periods all the children got to play and everyone enjoyed their game.

Ladies Football

The senior ladies had a terrific game with St Peters on Saturday night past and ran out easy winners in the end. There was little to separate the teams in the first half, but Adrienne Hoey at full back and Dara Collins in the forward line were excellent for the Bridge and half time saw the teams level. The Bridge girls began the second half in a very different mood and dominated play all over the field. Teresa Loye and Suzanne Meegan made midfield theirs and Kevina Reel at half forward helped to build up a lead that St Peters could not bite into.

The seniors play the rescheduled game with Whitecross in the Bridge on Wednesday evening at 7 30 pm.

The U14s were scheduled to play Killeavy on Wednesday evening at the Bridge but this game has been re-set for the following Wednesday 4th May at 6 30 pm because of the mission which takes place all next week in Killeavy.
