Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes
Seniors
A large crowd of Bridge supporters headed for Mullaghbawn on Sunday after dinner anticipating a tightly fought contest in this local derby and returned home with plenty to discuss. Mullaghbawn played with the wind in the first half and worked it to their advantage. Luck played a hand also as it seemed they just had to turn towards the goals and the ball went over the crossbar. As the half progressed a sense of unease was felt at some of the referee’s decisions with blatant fouls on our players not being censored while the Bridge were penalised too easily. But the game continued with Mullaghbawn getting their scores and by the break they had a substantial lead of 0-9 to 0-2.
The wind was still a major factor in the second half but our accuracy let us down. Our first shot went wide and then Damian McCann scored a point and we started to get more of the midfield ball. Mullaghbawn player Kieran McKinley was then dismissed five minutes in but as usually happens we were unable to make the extra player count. While we notched up eleven points in this half we should have had more as we had a lot of the play. Our players took too much out of the ball and in taking the wrong options they played themselves out of the game. Mullaghbawn had another man Ronan Quinn dismissed in the dying minutes of the game but as the final whistle blew we were still two points behind.
Next Friday night we play Maghery in the Bridge.
B Team
The B team had the usual tough encounter with Culloville last Wednesday night. Culloville scored right from the throw-in and had scored two more points before Brendan McGuire pointed a free for the Bridge. Our lads played in a very lack-lustre manner throughout the first half and nothing went right for them. They won little or nothing at mid-field, the forwards were way off mark and the line of defence was easily penetrated. Brendan scored again just before half time but at the break the score was 0-7 to 0-2.
When play resumed Culloville was away first and it seemed as if they were going to run away with the match, but Kieran Crummy pointed his free and the Bridge started to claw their way into the game. Thomas Mallie worked tirelessly all over the field tackling and dispossessing and soon the forwards succeeded in pressurising the Culloville goals. The Culloville goalie was forced to make a save, but a long ball was played in and Kevin Burns found the back of the net. Gary Quinn then equalised but Culloville went one ahead. The game was tight now but the lads played determinately and at the final whistle The Bridge were ahead by two points.
This week they have a home game against Dromintee.
Minors
The minors recorded another victory on Monday last with a good win over Killeavy. The team played well with Paudie Cumisky, Aidan Hearty, Ruairi Griffin and Kieran Martin performing particularly well. They don’t have a match this week but there will be training for them on Monday night.
U 16
The U16s did not have a game last Thursday but this week they play away to St Brigids.
U 14
The U14 team were well beaten by a strong Cullyhanna team at home last Tuesday night. On a wet night the Cullyhanna team started strongly and had built up a convincing lead by half time. The Bridge boys fared little better in the second half as they struggled to make an impact on the game. Towards the end of the match Silverbridge started to break through the opposition’s defence but Cullyhanna ran out deserved winners. The team does not have a game this week but there will be training on Tuesday night at 7 pm and all players are asked to attend.
U 12
The U12s travelled to Carrickcruppen on Saturday and although they played their best they returned home minus the points. Their final score of 1-12 would have been a winning one in another game but unfortunately Carrickcruppen also managed to get 4-13. The lads gave of their all and in the end that is what matters. Training as usual this week.
U 10
The U10s were very busy last week. On Thursday night they played Dromintee. This young team played out of their skins and were unfortunate to come out the losers. They went in at the break a goal behind and added another goal and a point to the tally but it just wasn’t enough.
On Sunday morning St Pats provided the opposition. The lads had a good all round game with some skilful defending but once again they lost after playing well. Their next match will be on Sunday week with Killeavy.
Ladies Football
The U14 ladies deserved their victory over Killeavy on Friday night last in the Bridge. The visitors got off to the better start and opened the scoring with a point. They scored another two points but then our girls settled into the game and two goals gave us a three-point advantage at the break. Amy McQuillan had a tremendous game at centre half back and helped thwart the Killeavy attack. The goals of Aoibhin Traynor, Christine Greville and Meegan Burns ensured the Bridge win. The final score was 4-2 to 1-6.
The senior girls had a good win against Sarsfields on Saturday evening. They dominated play throughout the match and at halftime they led by 1-2 to no score. As they have a very small panel they had to play most of the second half with 14 girls when two players had to retire due to injury and illness, but they still went on to win by 2-3 to 0-2. Siobhan Moley, Teresa Loye and Dara Collins were in their usual good form while Ciara McKinley and Sinead Reel were excellent corner backs.
Lotto
The Lotto numbers in last week’s draw were 9, 10, 12 and 28. There wasn’t a winner but five match threes who each won £40. The jackpot now stands at £10,800 or €16,100 so get your numbers done.
Open Air Concert
The management committee are meeting on Tuesday night at 9 pm. As they will be making arrangements for our next big venture, the open-air concert which is being held in the field on 9th July, they would like anyone who is willing to help with putting up posters, to come to the meeting.
Sponsored Walk
The walk and fun day was a tremendous success last Monday. Right from the start everything went to plan and all who participated agreed they thoroughly enjoyed the day. We would like to say “well done” to all the walkers young and not so young and of course thank their sponsors. A word of appreciation goes to Michael Connolly who sponsored and organised the bouncy castles. Our young patrons had great fun and the face painters and magician really made their day. I must also mention Anne and Amanda Garvey who organised the barbecue and made sure everyone was fed, and say thanks to the people who let us have the use of their barbecues.
Many of the walkers brought their sponsorship money with them on Monday but could I ask those who still have to hand in their donations to do so this week.
Youth Club
The Youth club will not be on for the next two Fridays.
