Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes
Seniors
The seniors had a tough match on Friday evening against Tír na nÓg in Portadown. After the heavy rain the pitch was very greasy and the players were slipping and falling at vital points in the play. The Bridge got away first but the first sailed wide. They kept the pressure on and played the vital long ball in and Ciaran Conlon scored a goal, but the home team replied with two points from frees. Two more points from Damien and Ciaran increased the tally and great defending by Peter, Anthony and Kieran forced the opposition to send their shots wide. Then Tír na nÓgs moved forward and while defending his goals Kenneth lost his footing and an Ógs goal resulted. Another point for them and they had taken the lead, but our men battled on and with Barry and Stefan fielding and dispossessing play progressed and at the break the teams were level.
The second half was a tight affair with neither side willing to concede defeat and so it was fifteen minutes before the first score and it was our’s with a cheeky goal from Barry. Colm Traynor then returned to play after an enforced break due to injury and showed his usual good form and the lads got a couple points more. The backs were tremendous and contested every ball and things progressed nicely. Damien found the back of the net and the lads might have felt the game was theirs to claim but Ógs continued to field with determination and they got another goal, but time ran out for them and we went home with the points.
Next Sunday we have Pearse Ógs at home in the Bridge.
B Team
This week’s game is on Monday night when the team play host to Mullaghbawn at 8 pm.
Minors
The minors played Carrickcruppen last Monday night but have still to find the form they showed at the beginning of the league and lost to a more determined team. These lads are young and will improve as they gain in experience. Young Liam Finnegan had a good game, playing first as a back but ending the match in the forward line.
U 16
The U 16s were in fine form for last week’s game with Shane O’Neills. In the first half they defended the club goals and played well to score 2-5 in that half. After the break they got off to a good start with three well-worked points from Stephen Campbell (0-6) and Peter Carragher (0-1). Seamus Hearty, Declan Gollogly and Christopher Murphy performed well in defence while Ruairi Griffin (2-0) and Cathal Fegan (0-1) controlled midfield for long periods of the match. Stephen Campbell, Brendan Faughey and Thomas Walsh (0-1) gave the opposing defenders plenty to think about. The final score was 2-14 to 2-8 to the Bridge.
U 14
The U14 team faced Shane O’Neills on Sunday evening last in a match played out in great conditions and despite a good performance the Bridge suffered defeat. Shane O’Neill gained control of the match with some early scores but the bridge boys held on and produced a strong second half performance to narrow the margin. There were good performances on the night from Paudie Griffin and Harry Thornton.
This match was followed by a disappointing defeat away to Dromintee on Tuesday night. The Bridge boys didn’t start well and Dromintee scored a few goals to build up a good lead by half time. The lads responded with some good goals in the second half from Thomas McKenna and Martin Hearty with Oliver Hearty also playing well in defence. But the lead that Dromintee had built up in the first half proved too much for our lads to recover.
This week’s match is the championship shield semi-final against Mullaghbawn in Newtown tonight (Tuesday).
U 10
The young U 10 team put up a great show against Crossmaglen. Peter Reel opened the scoring and Owen Burns following suit 30 seconds later. Aidan Grant and Padraig Keating then got in on the act and Gary Reel got a goal. Just before the break Bernard Garvey found the back of the net to add to the good lead that the boys had built up. Cross scored first at the resumption but then Bernard Garvey got another goal and had to retire injured. Cross slowly came into the game and scored 2-4 before the Bridge got a penalty that Eoin Burns converted. The whole team had a great game, with Cormac McKinley in goals carrying off a wonderful save, the backs defending tightly, great catching and fielding from the two midfielders Bryon Murphy and Eoin Burns and the forwards on fire.
