Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

Seniors

The seniors had a tough but sporting match with Pearse Ógs on Sunday and were happy to come away with the points. The team had an ideal start winning the ball from the throw-in and surging forward culminating in a point from Cormac McAvoy. The next score was Ógs but Frank Smyth gathered a ball on the run and delivered a fine point. A little later on Frank was placed in the right spot, read the ball perfectly and we had a goal. Two more points from Liam Campbell and Ciaran Conlon, a good save by Kenneth in goals with the backs clearing the ball out of danger meant we reached the break four points ahead. As play resumed we piled on the pressure and added another two points to our tally but Ógs gradually got into the game and clawed their way back and at the end only the goal separated the teams but it was in favour of the Bridge and that’s what mattered to us. Backs Anthony Mallie, Kieran Campbell and Peter McCreesh fielded and harried and denied Ógs many chance, while Barry Campbell had a brilliant game roaming the field, picking up the breaks and laying the ball on.

This week’s match with Dromintee will be played on Thursday night in Dromintee.

B Team

The B team continued their unbeaten record in the League with a good win over Mullaghbawn last Monday night.

Minors

The Minors were back to winning ways on Wednesday night when they had a good win over St John’s to proceed to the next round of the championship. Fergal Campbell was the target man up front and he took some nice scores and Ciaran Martin got two good goals to help the team on their way. It was a good win but the team are only too aware that tougher contests lie ahead and that they must focus on them.

U 16

The U 16’s played St Brigids last Thursday night and after a tough battle won the points. Neither team shone in the in the first quarter, But a Ruairi Griffin goal midway through the half gave the Bridge the edge and they went in at half time five points to the good. The second half was much of the same with St Brigids putting us under pressure for long periods. Some missed chances on our side left it a tense finish but we held on and came out winners by two points. Good performances came from Dean Martin, Daniel Garvey, Seamus Hearty and Cathal Lambe.

U 14

The U 14s qualified for the Div.1 Shield final with a semi-final victory against Mullaghbawn in Newtown last Tuesday night. The lads started this match well with some long range points from Thomas McKenna and Paul McNamee giving an early lead, and increased their lead to 5 points approaching half time with a Harry Thornton goal. The Bridge defence led by Christopher McShane, Oliver Hearty, Neil McCann, Sean Murphy and Peter Carragher performed well in the second half as they held firm against the Mullaghbawn attack. Second half scores from Calem Rowland, Paudie Griffin and Brian Hearty secured a place in the Final for Silverbridge. This was a great overall performance from the Bridge with fine individual displays from Gary Rowland, Ciaran McGuire and Martin Hearty.

The final takes place tonight (Tuesday) against Dromintee in Belleek at 7 15 pm.

U 12

The U 12s had a great win on Saturday over St Josephs. At half time the boys led by 1-6 to no score with points from Gerard Mines, Martin Hearty, Francis Carragher and Seamus Kelly, two points from Cillian Quinn and a brave fisted goal from Gary Reel. In the second half St Josephs came back to within a point of the boys but some great defending from Darren Murphy, Patrick Reel, Paul Hearty and Brian Murphy and in particular an important free from Cillian Quinn near the end of the game meant the boys held on to win a very exciting and sporting game.
