Silverbridge Harps GAC Notes

This week’s talking point around the club will not be football but the despicable act of vandalism carried out on our new field in the early hours of Saturday morning. The work on the field is part of an on-going plan to improve our facilities and provide adequate training and playing space for the many people in our community both young and not so young who wish to play Gaelic games.  Everyone knows the great effort that has been put into the new field by club members and the wider community and it is impossible to understand the action of the perpetrator of this act of wanton vandalism which attempted to undo the good work so far done also left so many homes over a wide area without water on Saturday.

Seniors

The senior team knew they had a difficult task in their match with Mullaghbawn on Wednesday night, but they started the game with determination and won the ball from the throw-in but their shot went wide. From that point on the visitors won most of the midfield battle and moved forward at pace putting the Bridge backs under serious pressure. Anthony. Kieran and Pete withstood the attacks capably harrying and intercepting, but Mullaghbawn scored their first point from a 13 yard free in the sixth minute and went on to score four points more before the Bridge got on the scoreboard with a free from Ciaran Conlon. Liam Campbell made a great interception and passed the ball to Brendan Burns who turned and took his point but Mullaghbawn replied with a goal. The Bridge worked hard and neither team scored for seven minutes. This time it was the Bridge who won three points with a Cormac McAvoy goal. Mullaghbawn scored two more points to lead by five points at the break.

Mullaghbawn had the better start in the second half but they sent three shots wide in the first five minutes thanks in no small part to the Bridge backs. This turned out to be a more even contest with both teams having more or less the same chances, but Mullaghbawn had done enough in the first half to claim the match and the final score was 1-12 to 1-6. This was a game played in a very sporting manner with players and supporters showing consideration for the men on the field of play.

Next week’s match is away to Wolfe Tones on Sunday at 2 pm.

Minors

The minors took on Crossmaglen in the second round of the Championship last Monday night. They had the advantage of a home game but it was Cross who got the dream start with a point in the fourth minute followed immediately by two goals. The Bridge could not get into gear and were held scoreless for twenty minutes and by halftime they were fighting an uphill battle. Cross went on the attack as soon as the ball was thrown in for the second half and soon had another point. Vince Mackin made a valiant attempt to deny them a goal but they found the back of the net from the rebound. Liam Finnegan played his heart out but neither he nor Ruairi Griffin could rouse the team and so Cross proceed to the next round. We congratulate them and wish them success.

Ladies Football

The U 14 ladies had a good win against Crossmaglen last Monday night. Although both teams were short players they opted to play the game and gave of their best. Bridge player Aoibhín Traynor was top scorer on the night, and Siobhan Gernon, Amy McQuillan and Laura Murphy all performed well to ensure a Bridge victory.

New Field

Once again we are looking for help to build another part of the retaining wall. We have had a terrific response so far and if we get the same number of brickies and labourers on Tuesday night at 7 pm the job will take no time at all.
