U 21
The U 21s had their first outing of the year on Sunday last when they played Keady in the first round of the championship. On a fine autumn morning with a slight breeze we were treated to a good game of football. Liam opened the scoring for the Bridge with a point from a move which began with an interception by Kevin at midfield. Ciaran then converted a free to put us two points up. The lads showed some good teamwork and moved the ball quickly, fielding and tackling and denying the opposition the chance to settle. Miceal made a good save in goals but the backs couldn’t clear the ball and the visitors pointed from a free and converted another free soon afterwards. Liam and Eugene increased our tally and then Ciaran beat the keeper with his penalty kick. He scored a point after that but then the team seemed to slack and Keady scored two points. At the break we had a four point lead.Keady went on the attack from the resumption but brave defending by Stephane sent the ball back up the field but out first two efforts went wide and it was Keady who opened the scoring. Willie was strong in defence and Seamie made some good runs forward but the team forgot to take their scoring boots back with them after the break for they sent seven shots wide and only one across the bar in this half. They did keep the pressure on and Keady had to work very hard to keep them out and they saved Liam’s shot at goal in the final minutes, while picking up their own scores to bring the teams level. The final few minutes were very tense as the bridge tried time and again to get the winning score but ha to be content with a draw in the end.
The replay will be next weekend, details of which will be announced in the papers.
Underage Presentation
On Sunday afternoon last Paul McGrane presented all our young boy and girl footballers up to and including U 14 with their awards. The clubrooms was full to capacity and with such a huge number of young children the future of the club and Gaelic football is assured well into the future.Club chairman, Donal Walsh, welcomed Paul, whom he called the best midfielder in Ireland, to the club. He congratulated all the young players for their endeavour throughout the year and was especially proud of the U 10s who were the first team to bring home three cups in the one year. He thanked the team managers for their hard work and commitment and noted some of these managers were on our 1984 minor team that won the county championship that year and were now passing on their experience. Donal drew the attention of the young players and their parents and friends to the new field and described how they would soon have so much extra space on which to train and play. The field is just a part of our development plan, a plan which in a few years time will give us facilities equal to any in Ireland.
Jarlath Burns who was MC for the evening then gave the children an opportunity to put questions to Paul. Paul encouraged the youngsters to keep playing and training and look forward to a great future.
The presentation ceremony began with the U 14 girls whom manager Kevin O’Connell introduced. Their player of the year is Niamh Gernon and Sinead Carragher most improved player. As well as team members the very young girls who turned up every Sunday morning for training also received medals.
Deirdre Quinn then presented the Michael Donnelly memorial cup to captain of the winning team Martin hearty.
Managers Kevin Martin and Owen McKeown then called up the U 6s for their medals. Then Mick McGeeney, Martin Reel and Brendan Murphy brought the U 8s forward.
Then it was time for the U 10s to step forward. Paddy Reel and Cathal McKeown received the Carryduff Cup; Paul Hearty and Paul McKeever the Thomas McCrink Cup and Owen Reel, Bryan Murphy and Bernard Garvey the League Cup on behalf of the team and everyone received a medal. Martin Reel, Joe O’Connell and Jarlath Burns are the team managers and they are very grateful for the great support that they have received all year from the many parents who helped out.
The U 12s who were managed by Frank Smyth and Barry Campbell were also awarded medals. This was a very young team and although they had only a few wins they showed great character and never gave up. Player of the year is Martin Hearty with Cormac Reel most improved player.
The U 14s under the management of Liam Murphy and Gerry Smyth, who is also part of the management of the South Armagh Selection, reached the final of the Shield for the second year in a row. Player of the Year is Ciaran McGuire and most improved player is James Garvey. All the team were presented with medals and two U 12s, Cillian Quinn and Seamie Kelly, were awarded for turning up for training all the time.
All the young players who represented their club were congratulated: Grainne Garvey and Laura McShane who were on the Armagh Primary schools team, Amie McQuillan and Megan Burns who played with the Armagh U 14s, Thomas McKenna, Ciaran McGuire and Ollie Hearty who played with the South Armagh Selection.

When Donal was speaking to the children on Sunday and telling them of the future plans for the club it was impossible not to think of the sad demise of Jim Martin and remember the part he played in plastering the resource centre and he was always a part of club life. Once again we send our sincere condolences to Frances, Paula and Michael and to all his family circle.| < Prev | Next > |
