Seniors.  Silverbridge Harps v. St Patricks.

Being a local derby between two teams that have a history of friendly rivalry through the long years the many supporters who came to Keeley Park last Wednesday night were expecting a good contest and they were not disappointed.
It was a game in which thirty men were willing to give of their best for one hour, and a heart-stopping encounter was the result with the narrowest of margins at the final whistle and the battle won by the Bridge.
The Bridge got away first with their first shot just wide, but an interception by Anthony Mallie which passed to Liam Campbell, was flicked to Ryan Hamill who got it to Damian McCann and the first point of the game was ours.  When Christopher Reel won the ball from the kick-out and passed it to Liam Campbell we had another point. Cullyhanna then got two points but Damian McCann pointed to put us ahead again. Then came the sweetest moment when Liam Campbell got the ball and headed goal wards. He had ample opportunity to point but being Liam he took his time and found the back of the net to give us an edge.  The game moved at a scorching pace with both teams giving total commitment and picking off their scores. Further points from Eugene Byrne and Damian McCann, and sharp play picking out each other gave us a two-point lead at the break with a score of 1-5 to 0-6.
After the break Brendan Bellew pointed from a Cormac McAvoy pass to add to our lead, and Damian McCann and Ciarán Conlon put us further ahead. The St Pats men then dominated for a period to get two points, and indeed failed to make the most of their chances at this time when they missed some scorable frees. Then we had a defender sent off for a second yellow card offence and the visitors sought to make their extra man count. Our lads grouped to withstand the onslaught and although we managed to get the ball forward we missed the opportunity to score but the team also only allowed St Pats to score once in this period. By the final whistle our one point lead was sufficient. The final score was 1-8 to 0-10.
Next Sunday the team is away to Ballyhegan when the game will be at 5 30 pm.

B Team

The B team were in good form again on Friday night last for their match with Mullaghbawn.
They settled first and Colm Traynor opened the scoring with a point, followed soon afterwards by a goal from Bernard Connolly and a nicely-taken free by Brendan Crummy. As the action continued two of our backs clashed leaving the goals vulnerable but Mullaghbawn only claimed a point. The visitors began to win more of the midfield contest and piled on the pressure but points from Kieran Crummy, Frank Smyth and a long kick in by Kieran Campbell that sailed over the bar kept the Bridge well in front at the break.
They were away again on the resumption of play, putting the first attempt wide but Colm Traynor opened the scoring once more for the Bridge. This turned to be a half in which the lack of scores combined with the amount of wides on both sides must be noted. Mullaghbawn only scored once, in the 20th minute, and the Bridge had their second point thanks to Thomas Mallie near the end of the game. It was a fast match that moved at pace up and down the field with some good moves and teamwork, and good fielding to turn the ball around. The final score was 1-7 to 0-4. The team has a bye this week so training as usual.

Minors

The minors are away to Dromintee this week.

U 16

The U 16s played at home to a very strong Plunketts side and right from the throw in we were on the back foot. An early penalty for the away side set the tone for the rest of the half. We battled hard but just could not convert our chances into scores. In the second half the away side got a few early points without reply. We battled hard throughout the match but were just outclassed by a better side.  Peter Carragher and Thomas Walsh performed well on the night. A bye for this team also this week but for them, too, training as usual.

U 14

Silverbridge U14 recorded their first win of the season at home to Cullyhanna on Tuesday night, This was hard fought win from the Bridge with all the boys displaying great commitment from the first whistle.  The first half was a close affair but goals from Niall Connolly and Sean McLaughlin gave the Bridge a narrow half time lead, Cullyhanna fought back well in the second half to reduce the lead to a point. However the Bridge increased their effort with further scores from Peter Carragher and Gary Rowland to secure the victory in a tight finish.  Overall this was a good hard working performance from Silverbridge with good performances from all players including Jimmy Carr, Sean Murphy Eamon McCrave, Martin Hearty & Gary Martin. Tonight (Tuesday) the team travels to Dromintee.

U 10

The U 10s lost by a point on Sunday morning to suffer their first defeat of the season. The lads had a great start to the game and had scored 1-4 without reply but when they lost Padraig Keating to injury Shane O’Neills scored two goals but by half time the Bridge were still a point ahead. The teams put in a terrific effort to provide a great game with point for point scoring and at two minutes to go they were level. Shanes got a free which they converted and our lads just ran out of time to get the equaliser. A great game in which all the lads played very well.
Training is on Tuesday night at 6 30 pm.

U 8

Training for boys and girls aged between five and eight began on Sunday morning last and will continue each Sunday morning at 10 30am. As there are a lot of children at this level we would be very grateful if some of the parents would stay to give a hand.
