Silverbridge Notes 5th June 2006

E-mail Print

Seniors:   Silverbridge 0-12   Culloville 0-10.

The seniors were successful second time around in their contest with Culloville for a place in the next round of the championship. Although the Bridge won the ball from the throw-in their first scoring chance failed and Culloville got on to the scoreboard first. Right from the start the Bridge backs marked tightly and harried the Culloville forwards to force them wide of the mark, but Culloville were soon three points ahead with two points from play and one a converted free. Then Barry Campbell won the ball at midfield and it was passed to Cormac McAvoy whose fisted point got the Bridge going. The lads piled on the pressure and Ciaran Conlon looked as if he might get a goal but had to be content with a point. Then Brendan Bellew got the ball and headed up the field shaking off two of the opposition to take a brilliant point.  At this time the Bridge had the most of the possession but just couldn’t convert their chances. Indeed throughout the game it seemed they were only certain of scoring from the awkward angle. They played some good football, supporting well and tackling and dispossessing, but were perhaps a bit over anxious as they approached the goals and their efforts drifted wide. By the break they led by the narrowest of margins but they had seven wides and at least one goal chance, so things looked bright enough.
Culloville got the better start when play resumed and got two points right off but Ciaran Conlon pointed to keep the teams level. When the Bridge played the simple game of Gaelic football and passed the long ball in they were very effective and this resulted in fine points from Cormac McAvoy, Liam Campbell and Ciaran Conlon.  Barry Campbell read the game brilliantly and was a steadying influence all over the field with much of the ball moving through him. Peter McCreesh, Stefan Murphy and Christopher Reel refused to allow the opposition to settle and denied them their runs forward time and again. All in all this was an exciting game that kept the adrenalin going until the very last whistle, and a game in which the Bridge created many opportunities but their finishing let them down, but they did enough and in the end it was they who moved into the next round.
They meet Culloville again this week when they are away to them on Friday night for this week’s league match.

B Team

Last week’s match with Mullaghbawn was postponed as the referee did not turn up. This week the team travels to Crossmaglen for their championship match with the Cross men.

Minors

The minors had a deserved win over Carrickcruppen last Monday night in a great open game of football in which the forwards excelled in taking their scores, building up a good lead by half-time, and, while the home team did enjoy a revival in the second half, our lads held on to win well. This should now mean the team is in the top four of their division.

U 16

The U 16s have passed the first hurdle in the championship race with a good win against Shane O’Neills in Camlough last Wednesday night. It was a tight match between two evenly-matched teams but our lads found themselves behind at the break. They came out renewed on the resumption of play and with three goals managed to turn the game around to win eventually by five points. The whole team played well but Kevin O’Neill, Ollie Hearty and Ciaran McGuire had a terrific match. Details of this week’s game will be in the local papers.

U 14

The U14 team were defeated at home to Shane O'Neills on Tuesday night last.  This was a much-improved performance from the previous week with Silverbridge taking an early lead against Shanes, which they held for most of the first half. A late goal however gave Shanes a 4-point lead at half time and they held this lead throughout the second half and eventually ran out convincing winners.  Silverbridge though will be pleased with their performance ahead of their championship Semi Final with Carrickcruppen this Tuesday night.

U 12

The U 12s put on a great display of football on Saturday past to force a draw with St Josephs.. Every one of the team gave of their best and shook off the bad luck that has been keeping them from scoring in past games.

U 10

The U 10s played some terrific football on Saturday to win through to the final eight in the Newry Mitchells Blitz. They were a credit to the club and their managers were very proud of the gracious manner in which they claimed  victory and accepted defeat.
The action next Saturday is in Carryduff where they will defend the title won last year.

Ladies Football

This was a good week for ladies football with both the U 14s and the senior girls recording emphatic victories.  On Monday night the U 14s made the long journey to Portadown to play the local Tír na nÓg side in the championship. Trailing by 2-2 to no score after ten minutes, things did not look good for the Silverbridge girls but they battled bravely against a strong wind to trail by five points at half time. The second half was all one-way traffic with full forward, Laura McShane, leading the scoring charge. Niamh Gernon and Christine Greville also contributed handsomely to the scoring, while Laura Murphy starred at fullback when switched from centre half, completely snuffing out any attempt by the home side to get back into the game. Final score was Silverbridge 8-5, Tír na nÓg 3-9.
Incidentally, the above game was played on St Malachy’s hurling club pitch on the Moy Road. Silverbridge senior men’s team played on the same field in the late 1970’s and won by 3-1 to 0-9, with Eamon McCann and Martin Murphy supplying all the scores between them.
On Wednesday night the senior girls defeated Keady by 4-14 to 2-1. As the score line might suggest, the forwards were in fine form with seven different girls contributing to the scoring. Roisin Murphy and Laura Murphy were also in fine form in the backline.
Team: E McGahon, L Murphy, M Burns, O Reel, R Murphy, L Murphy, S Meegan (1-0), T Loye (0-1), S Moley (0-2), S O’Neill (0-2), S Carragher, D Collins (1-3), A Traynor (1-3), K McKinley (1-3). Subs: L Reel, A Hoey, J Reel, C Greville, C Hughes.
The junior championship game against Éire Óg was postponed due top a bereavement in the Éire Óg club and will now be played on Wednesday evening at 7-30 pm in Carrickcruppen. The seniors also travel to Sarsfields on Saturday evening for the final game of the first round of league games.

Last week’s numbers were 2, 12, 24 and 31. The jackpot did not go but there were ten match three winners . The jackpot will be £17,400 or €26,100 for this week’s draw.
