Seniors
The senior team had plenty of football last week. On Tuesday night they were in Cullyhanna for their return League match with St Patricks, on Thursday evening they were in Lurgan taking on Clan Éireann and on Sunday they had Ballyhegan in the Bridge. They were in excellent form for the St Pats contest and we saw some good team football to win the encounter. Liam Campbell opened the Bridge account with a point after collecting a good pass from Brendan Bellew and then pointed a free. Next came a converted free from Ciaran Conlon and Cormac McAvoy pointed in a good combination move with men running in formation up the field before the home team scored. Eugene Byrne and Damian McCann then got two points each to build on our lead and with the backs standing firm the lads were well in command. They did slack off a little in the latter stages of the half and the Cullyhanna men were able to run forward to pick up some scores but at the break the Bridge led 0-8 to 0-4.
As the second half began the lads won the ball and moved forward exerting pressure and Liam Campbell’s ball shot just past the goalmouth. Cullyhanna replied with a point but Ciaran Conlon converted a free awarded for a foul on Eugene Byrne. St Pats had a fruitful period scoring two points but the Bridge gained the upper hand again and more points from Ciaran Conlon and Damian McCann and a fine save by goalie Miceal Reel meant the Bridge could claim the points. The final score was 0-13 to 0-8.
On Thursday night in Lurgan they once again gave a great display of football but were defeated by the narrowest of margins.
The backline of Nicholas Traynor, Anthony Mallie and Stefan Murphy shone and refused to submit to the Lurgan men’s pressure. The forwards had the same number of scoring opportunities as Clanns but one of Clann’s scores was a converted penalty which gave them a three point margin at the interval. Although the lads tried their best and picked up six points in the second half they just were unable to get the score which would have given them a draw and a fair outcome to the game. As it was the game ended on a scoreline of 0-11 to 1-9.
By Sunday the rigors of the week began to tell. The lads got off to a good start and might have had a goal from the first move forward but the ball went across the goalmouth, and the next sally forward was broken down but two Ciaran Conlon points got the Bridge going. For the first fifteen minutes or so they held sway at midfield and traded points with Ballyhegan, but the visitors started to win the breaking ball and quickly headed forward. In one such move they found the back of the net to take the lead for the first time and a converted free put them three points ahead. Points from Brendan Bellew and Ryan Hamill narrowed the margin and at the break Ballyhegan led by 1-6 to 0-7.
The game continued in the same manner after the break but the backs lost the battle to the visitors and soon Ballyhegan had another goal. Brendan Bellew gave a man of the match display throughout the whole game and tried to inspire by example, running, laying the ball on or taking vital scores. Goalkeeper, Miceal Reel, made a great save when he stood his ground under a high ball coming in, took it under pressure to drive it back out the field. By this stage the Bridge were back to within one point but Ballyhegan claimed another goal in the dying seconds of the match and the game was theirs. The score at the end was 0-13 to 3-8.
Next Sunday’s game is in Ballymacnab at 2 pm.
