Silverbridge Notes 9th October 2006

Seniors

The Bridge had home advantage in Sunday’s encounter with Sarsfields and they made the most of it. Both teams had their eye on the league tables and were determined to make the game count. The spectators were treated to a fast game of football in which every player counted, and tackling and fielding was the order of the day.
The Bridge got away fast with Gerard McGarvey, Ciaran Conlon and Liam Campbell taking their points. The visitors then got in on the act with three points to even matters and so the half progressed with the lead passing back and forth between the teams, and by half-time they were level at 1-6 each; the Bridge goal courtesy of Liam Campbell.
The rain that had started just before the break continued for most of the game but did not dampen the players’ enthusiasm. Eugene Byrne and Damian McCann scored two points as the game got going again but the visitors replied with a point of their own. A Cormac McAvoy point from a good Damian McCann pass, points from Dee himself and Ciaran Conlon, a converted 45 by Gerard McGarvey and a good save by goalkeeper Miceal Reel was enough to ensure a Bridge win. The final score was 1-12 to 1-9.
Next week’s match with Keady is on at 2 pm in the Bridge.

B Team

The B Team were back in action on Saturday evening when they met St Patrick’s in the League semi-final in Dromintee. It was a bitter evening with a strong wind blowing down the field, but the pitch was in great order and the teams served up some good football.
The Bridge had the wind advantage in the first half and used it well to go in at the break with a lead of 2-8 to 0-3. Jarlath Burns ruled at midfield, winning the ball despite being closely marked and distributing it well. The backs worked hard to deny the Cullyhanna men possession and scores and Ciaran McCann defended his goals with determination. When the forwards got the ball they always looked dangerous, and when Barry Campbell moved in to the forward line he and Bernard Connolly combined to claim two goals.
The Cullyhanna men got off better in the second half and they took the first three scores but the Bridge men settled again and matched these scores to hold their lead and ran out winners by 2-8 to 0-6.

The Minor match with St Patricks has been set for next Saturday at 4-30 pm but as yet the venue has not been announced so watch the press for these details.

U 10

The U 10s travelled to Carrickcruppen on Sunday morning for the replay of the League Final with St Patricks. This was a game of two halves in which the Bridge lads could claim the first half and the halftime lead of 1-1 to 0-2. They lost their way a little after the break and, although the backs worked hard and midfield won some good ball, the forwards couldn’t get the scores. By the final whistle the Cullyhanna lads had turned the game around and ran out winners by 1-6 to 1-1. Congratulations to the St Patricks team and well done to our boys who provided us with some good football all year. They can be well pleased with the results of a year in which they reached 5 finals thanks in no small way to the dedication of the team mentors.

Youth Club

The youth club will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday night as usual. Could I ask parents to ensure they return to the club at 9 pm sharp each night to pick up their child/children, as the nights are too cold and dark for children to be hanging about and it is unfair to expect our youth leaders to remain late to supervise.
