Dinner Dance and Presentation.
A great time was had by all last Friday night in the Park Inn Hotel. After an excellent meal Club Secretary, Anthony Mallie, got the serious proceedings under way. He began by welcoming County and South Board representative. Seamus McDonagh and his wife Teresa and then called on Club Chairman, Donal Walsh, for a few words.
Donal welcomed everyone and gave pride of place to the B team and their managers, Rory Donnelly, Damien Finnegan, Gabe Grant and Jim McCann. This team was in excellent form all season and claimed three titles----South Armagh Championship, All-County championship and South Armagh league winners. He reminded us that teams from the club had contested 6 finals so far this year, with the seniors waiting to see whom they meet in the Division two final, and the U 21s are into the next round of the championship. He noted the number of young people there that night and welcomed them as the future and backbone of the club.
At that stage he thanked our main sponsor, Rory Donnelly, and all the other sponsors whose help with kits, jerseys and anything that was needed was very much appreciated. He commended the Lotto Committee and Lotto sellers who have worked so hard to make the weekly Lotto the success it is.
In dwelling a little on future plans within the club we were told that goal posts and nets would be installed in February/March in the magnificent new field, in preparation for next season.
Kieran Murphy began the presentation of awards to the Lady footballers, having first thanked Tony Hearty who so kindly sponsors the senior awards every year.
The U 14 Player of the Year is Laura Murphy, while Patricia Murphy is the minor Player of the year. The minors are amalgamated with Mullaghbawn, playing under the name of Cashel and have reached the county final. Kieran then called on special guests and Armagh county players, club member Teresa Loye and Mairead Tennyson of Mullaghbawn to present the joint Senior Player of the Year awards to forward Seana O’Neill and corner back Lorraine Murphy. Mairead then completed the ladies’ section by presenting a special merit award to Teresa.
Kieran then donned one of his other hats to do the Scór presentations. The club remains very much committed to the Scór and competed in 7 disciplines at junior and senior level last year. Derbhaile Burns won an Ulster title in Solo singing and her mother accepted an award from Pat Traynor on her behalf. The Quiz team of Peter Murphy, Martin Reel, Jarlath Burns and Brian Murphy are county champions and received awards to mark their endeavours.
It was then Seamus McDonagh’s turn to take the chair and he commended the club committee, members and players for their commitment and forward thinking. He mentioned also the new field, South Board delegates Pat Traynor and Joe O’Connell, county PRO Michael Mallie, and referee Ronan Quigley who is ever reliable, and wished the club more success in 2007.
First up was the B championship team and captain Jarlath Burns received the cups ably aided by Bernard Connolly. Barry Campbell was the captain of the B league team and he received the cup to the cheers of his team-mates.
Brigid Reel presented the Peter Reel cup to the Senior player of the Year, Nicholas Traynor and Mixie Toal awarded Bernard Connolly with the title of B Player of the Year and the Mick bailie Cup. This year we introduced a new category—Young Player of the Year and it was only fitting that we name the cup after Peter Keeley who spent a lifetime encouraging and looking after young players. Tony McKenna presented the cup to the first recipient of the title Young Player of the Year, Ciaran Conlon. Mary Quinn presented the Gerry Hughes Cup to the Minor Player of the Year Colm Hughes, and U 16 Player of the year Kevin O’Neill received the Jim McKinley cup from Patrick Conlon.
To complete the formal part of the night Donal presented some special achievement awards. Niall Treanor and Gerard McGarvey represented the club on the county minor team and Gerard was part of the all-Ireland winning CBS team; Miceal Reel and Ciaran Conlon were on the county U 21 panel and Ciaran was also a member of the winning Jordanstown Freshers team.
With the serious part complete it was easy to relax and enjoy the night and this everyone did with gusto.
