U 21
The U 21s travelled the short journey in the road to Crossmaglen last Saturday afternoon to take on the home team in the U 21 Championship quarterfinal. It was a cold afternoon but the pitch was in great shape and we were treated to an exiting game of football. The Bridge had a terrific first half in which they really challenged the Cross lads. Right from the start the Bridge went on the offensive and Liam Campbell had the first chance to score but his shot fell short. Cross scored the first point but Liam pointed in reply and our lads kept piling on the pressure, but failed to convert their chances, and these wides made the difference in the end. Although the Bridge had the majority of possession in this half and had two goal-scoring chances, it was Cross who found the back of the net twice and left the field at the break relieved to be three points ahead. The score at halftime was 2-2 to 0-5.
Cross returned to the field of play in a more determined mode and scored the first point of the half. The Bridge lads seemed to lose some of their sense of purpose and made a few bad passes which were duly punished by the sharp work of the Cross forwards. We still held our own, however, and were in with a chance until Cross netted again and scored four more points as the half progressed with the Bridge scoring two in reply. Liam Campbell who worked at a marvellous rate throughout the game refused to give up and scored a goal in the final minutes of the game to narrow the deficit, but the victory belonged to Cross with a final score of 3-8 to 1-7.
The game produced all that was good in Gaelic football with nice interplay, tight fielding, excellent blocks, scores from difficult angles and forwards taking the chance offered to them.
In the end the Bridge ran out of time and we wish Crossmaglen luck as they progress to the next round.
