Silverbridge Notes 25th June 2007

E-mail Print

Seniors

The seniors had to be content with a draw in Sunday’s game with St Michaels.
Damian McCann got things going for the Bridge with two points in the first minute, and a Eugene Byrne goal and points from Damian, Eugene and Peter Burns gave the Bridge a two-point lead at the break.
Things did not go so well after the break as the Bridge conceded too many scorable frees and allowed the visitors notch up their scores.
The final score was Silverbridge 1-9, Newtown 0-12.
The team is away to Granemore for next Sunday’s match.

B Team

The B team were in fine form for last Wednesday night’s encounter with Killeavey in the Championship semi-final and progressed to the final where St Patricks will provide the opposition.
It was a bitterly cold evening but the contest on the field kept the large crowd of spectators well entertained. The Bridge played into the stiff breeze in the first half and produced some good football to go in two points ahead at halftime. Killeavey had two points up before the Bridge got into gear with a Gary Quinn goal putting them a point ahead. Two points from Bernard Connolly and a point each from Paudie Cummiskey and Kieran Crummy consolidated that lead. Throughout this half Jarlath Burns won most of the ball at midfield and the Bridge forwards piled on the pressure, while the backs combined to deny Killeavey any advantage.
Killeavey got the first point of the second half but Jarlath Burns scored a point in reply. Killeavey crowded Jarlath in this half to try to keep the ball out of his grasp but he still made some great catches and interceptions and added another point to his tally later in the half. Kieran Crummy kicked some wonderful long range and difficult points as well as a goal in this half and Brendan McGuire also got his name on the scoreboard. The whole team worked hard and well together and were worthy of their five-point win. The final score was 2-12 to 1-10.

Minors

The minors are away to St Johns tonight (Monday) in the Championship with a 7-30 pm throw-in.

U 16

The U 16s lost out to Dromintee on Thursday night but made a great game of it. Ollie Hearty was sound in defence, while the new pairing of Thomas McKenna and Peter Carragher worked well at midfield, with Brian Hearty and Ciaran McGuire playing well up front.

U 14

The U 14 team was defeated away to Crossmaglen on Tuesday night last.  Silverbridge again started the match well and took the lead from a Martin Hearty goal.  However, Cross fought back and ran out convincing winners as Silverbridge tired late on.  There were good performances on the night from Bernard Garvey, Paddy Reel and Gary Reel.

U 12

The U 12s had a good win at home to cross on Saturday. There was a good all-round team performance, with Gavin Rowland, Daniel Traynor, Ciaran Mulholland, Padraic Keating and Captain Eoin Burns showing well.
There will be training on Tuesday night at 6-30 pm.

U 10

The U 10s had a convincing win against Carrickcruppen on Sunday morning. The team played well with every player giving his all to overcome an under-strength Cruppen team.
This team will also have training on Tuesday evening at 6-30 pm.

Ladies Football

U 16

The u 16 ladies had a great first half in their match with Carrickcruppen last Monday night, but Cruppen were too strong in the second half and claimed the points.
There will be training on Monday evening (tonight) at 6-30 pm.

Seniors

The senior team had a convincing win against Tír na nÓg on a very wet night. Clare ó Callaghan opened the scoring win a point from the first attack, but Tír na nÓg responded with three points to take an early lead. A splendid goal from Aoibheann Traynor put the Bridge back in front, and points from Aoibheann and Dara Collins extended the lead. Threasa Loye put the Bridge further ahead with a well-taken goal before the home side replied with a goal from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime.
Laura Murphy and Adrienne Hoey were superb in a defence that showed great determination throughout and held the home side scoreless in the second half. Niamh Gernon was another to shine as the Bridge claimed another two points.
