Seniors
The seniors played two Lurgan teams at the weekend, but only added two points to their league tally. On Friday night they were up against Clann Éireann and lost by just one point against the run of play.
The Bridge got off to a steady start and were four points up by the time Clanns had their first score. The visitors only scored once more in this half and the Bridge should have led by more than four points at the break because they played the better football. We saw some good tackling and intercepting but the ball went wide a few too many times.
Clanns came out with all guns blazing for the resumption of play and goalkeeper, Miceal Reel, was forced to stretch to save their shot at goal. They converted the 45 and two more points saw them narrow the deficit to just one. Ruairi Murchan and Peter McCreesh picked up some vital balls and there was some good passes into the forward line but time and again the scores did not materialise.
Then the lads were caught out and Clanns equalised with an opportune goal and compounded their lead with another two points. Damian McCann, who had worked extremely hard throughout the game winning ball and passing the ball skilfully on, converted a free and then time ran out for the Bridge.
The final score was 1-9 to 0-11.
Sunday’s game with St Peters was a somewhat one-sided affair. The Bridge lads played with total commitment and in a fast game they combined to deny their opponents the chance to settle. Paudie Cummiskey got the Bridge away with a point from the throw-in and the team piled on the pressure although their next two chances went wide of the mark. Peters converted a free but the Bridge forwards worked the long ball in to their advantage and their scores began to mount up. The visitors had their moments, too, especially after goalie, Miceal Reel had deflected a goal shot, the referee judged the ball was fouled on the ground and awarded a penalty that was duly converted. The Bridge men remained nonplussed and the final score of the half was a fine Eugene Byrne goal.
Peters could only claim two points in the second half while the Bridge edged further into the lead.
The final score-line of 1-16 to 1-4 does not do justice to the part Peters played in the game. The Bridge were stung by the Friday night defeat and were not in the mood to suffer another defeat and the team played to a man to ensure victory was theirs.
Scorers: Paudie Cummiskey (0-1), Damian McCann (0-1), Eugene Byrne (1-3), Liam Campbell (0-7), Cormac McAvoy (0-1), Niall Treanor (0-1) and Brendan Byrne (0-2).
This week’s game is in Keady on Thursday night at 8 pm.
B Team
The B team were away to Pearse Ógs last Wednesday and played one of their best matches this season. A great team performance provided an exciting game in which the Bridge earned two good league points. Ógs got going first but the Bridge had established a 3-point lead by the break. Ógs came out in top gear after the intermission and plugged away to take the lead, but the Bridge lads held firm to win by 0-12 to 0-10.Jarlath Burns and Barry Campbell held sway in the middle, Brendan McGuire, Bernard Connolly and Thomas Mallie were enterprising up front, Kevin O’Connell was excellent in defence and Fergal Connolly with Nicholas Traynor supported strongly.
This week’s game is a home game with Tír na nÓg.
U 14
The U 14s have a home game this Tuesday when they play Forkhill at 7-15 pm.U 12
The U 12s played St Pats away on Saturday in their final league game, having already qualified for the play-offs. In a very lacklustre performance the boys never got to grips with the game from the first whistle and on the day were well beaten by the home side. This was a game the boys will want to forget; but they can look forward to the play-offs and the Shield final, where a big improvement will be required if they are to get any silverware. There will be training on Tuesday night at 6-30 pm sharp and every panel member must attend.
U 8
The U 8s travelled to Shane O’Neills on Sunday for a very enjoyable morning’s football. There were enough young players to make up two teams and both teams won their games, playing with great determination and pride.5 to 8 year olds
