Official Opening of New Fields.
Silverbridge Harps celebrated the official opening of their new fields on Sunday last and everything combined to provide a very successful day. There was a terrific festive atmosphere at Keeley Park all day Sunday as locals and well-wishers from near and far arrived to join in the festivities and the weather remained clement to keep spirits high. The hard work and foresight of the present and past Executive Committees finally reached fruition and the grounds looked exceptionally well.So many people have been involved in the work on the field from the day the land was purchased right up to the minute the referee, Pat McEneaney, blew the final whistle in the game between Armagh and Louth that it would be impossible to name each one. On behalf of the Committee I wish to acknowledge the support of our sponsors, all donations and the vast amount of help that has been volunteered these past years and recognise the commitment of some very dedicated people who seemed to have made the Bridge their second home over this past year especially and can give themselves a well-earned pat on the back.
A word of gratitude goes also to the footballers-boys, girls, ladies and men who provided some great entertainment over the hours of Sunday afternoon, for without GAA players all this work would be pointless.
I think we can surely say the future of GAA is guaranteed for a good few years to come in our small area especially when we could look down on the field as we did this afternoon and saw so many young children playing on the fields and quite a number of them had their own footballs with them.
Once again we thank everyone who had a part to play and assumed a role without fuss but worked diligently to contribute to the success of the event.
The ladies of Clady and the Bridge got proceedings going, with help from our underage players at the interval. GAA President, Nicky Brennan, performed the opening ceremony at 3 pm with Bishop Clifford giving the benediction. Then the Bridge men took the field against a Maghery selection, but it was shortly after five when the featured match and the one everyone was waiting patiently for commenced. Three Bridge players, Miceal Reel, Cormac McAvoy and Damian McCann, represented the club on the Armagh team and acquitted themselves very well. It was also pleasing to note that Crossmaglen Rangers’ players Aaron and Stephen Kernan came out the road to support us by playing with the Armagh squad even though they are still involved in Championship preparations with their own club. Both county teams provided an entertaining hour’s football much to the delight of the large crowd that had assembled and then went home contented.
That night John Glen played in the Resource centre, allowing all the workers to wind down and really appreciate how well the day had gone for us. A fitting ending to a happy day.
