Underage Presentations
On Sunday afternoon the clubrooms was full as young players and their families celebrated the achievements of the past year.Jarlath Burns was MC for the afternoon and introduced club Chairman Donal Walsh and special guest All Star Aaron Kernan.
Donal thanked the managers for their hard work over the year and commented on their coaching commitment, and congratulated the boys’ U 12 team that won the South Armagh Shield.
Aaron then answered some probing questions and encouraged the young players to train hard, be disciplined on and off the field, learn the basics of the game now when they are young and practise them at every opportunity.
Martin Reel then introduced the U6 and U8 boys and girls. This young group did not partake in competition as such but in the mini blitzes they played all year they lost only one game. He thanked his fellow mentors, Kevin Martin, Declan McVerry and Sean McKeown and the parents who stayed to help out each Sunday morning. Aaron then presented the children with their medals.
Michael McGeeney, underage coordinator, then stepped up to the mike. He, along with Jarlath Burns and Colm and Nicholas Traynor, coached the U 10s this year. He said this team had a hard act to follow but from April to October the children trained diligently and showed a vast improvement by the end of the year, coming very close to winning a couple of tournaments. He thanked those parents who helped out, but would welcome even more. He told those parents in the room that because they had not played football themselves should not be an excuse for not coaching. There are plenty of courses available and the mentors are only too willing to pass on their expertise. Aaron also presented these players with their medals.
The captain of our Senior team, Cormac McAvoy, was then introduced to present the Michael Donnelly Cup and Trophies to the winning team.
Then it was the turn of the U 12 girls and Kevin Martin told us how the girls are gaining in experience and confidence and commented on how all these young players are taking great pleasure from mastering the basic skills of Gaelic football. The girls are really embracing the work ethic. As well as playing for our club these youngsters also played for their school and eight of them went to Derry to take part in the Community Games and narrowly missed out on getting to the finals in Butlins. Everyone is looking forward eagerly to 2008!
Finally it was time for the U 12 boys to step forward. This team had shown great promise from U 8 and are continuing their progress up the GAA ladder, with much encouragement and advice from Martin Reel, Frank Smyth and Barry Campbell. They played 24 matches winning 18 of them, and reached two finals and took the South Armagh Shield back to Keeley Park. Two of the team, Padraig Keatings and Paul McKeever, were chosen for the U 12 South Armagh team. Martin Reel thanked the parents for getting the kids to training and games on time and for doing umpire or linesman as required. He thanked the players for their efforts all year, and for representing the club with pride on and off the field. He also had a word of thanks for the men who volunteered to drive the bus and for anyone who helped in any way. He had a special word of thanks for Aaron Kernan, saying there could be no better role model for young people anywhere.
Aaron presented the team medals and Paddy Reel received the Cup on behalf of the team.
Proceedings ended with a special medal being awarded to Sean Rock who plays on the U 6 team but togged out for the U 12s all year to keep them on their toes. With the formalities over it was time for photographs and then everyone relaxed to Tracey’s Disco.
