It has gone from strength to strength and now has a membership of some 120 young boys and girls from the age of ten upwards. The club meets each Tuesday night for the girls, each Wednesday night for the boys and every Friday is a mixed night.
We have a vibrant group of youth leaders who have been successful in organising a wide range of activities for the young people.
For the girls there has been Health and Beauty courses, incorporating healthy lifestyles, a baby-sitting course, Hip-Hop dancing, drama as well as a variety of sports.
A young men’s group has been started for the older boys, giving them the opportunity to explore issues that impact on their lives.
Several of the older members took part in and passed their Senior Members course. Some of the same group are also partaking in the SELB Junior Councillors Course which began in 2006. So far they have visited Newry and Mourne County Council, Louth County Council, Stormont and the Dáil to see how the business of government is undertaken. They have a visit to Westminster and the European Parliament to look forward to in the coming year.
We have a good variety of activities for everyone from table tennis, pool snooker and various board games to football, basketball, badminton, volleyball, unihok and tag rugby. Orienteering, ten-pin bowling and trips to the soccer dome have also taken place and were thoroughly enjoyed by the participants as were the various discos throughout the year.
We work hard to ensure the young people meet in an environment in which they may safely meet their friends, have some fun and partake of new experiences while at the same time preparing to take up their part in the local community from which we draw support.
